Landscape and nature

The Chartreuse area encompasses elevations from 200 to 2,082 metres and combines forests, preserved nature, villages and panoramic views. The Cirque de Bournillon is a karst landscape shaped by erosion and by water emerging from the Bournillon Cave.

The Au fil de la Bourne route is 33 kilometres long, passes through eight municipalities in Isère and Drôme, and offers varied landscapes and viewpoints. It is accessible by public transport. The Chartreuse hiking trail network includes a selection of 50 marked hiking routes for all levels.

The Saint-Nazaire-en-Royans aqueduct is 35 metres high and 235 metres long; it was built between 1873 and 1876. At the ENS du bois de la Bâtie and in the marais de Montfort, guided nature activities use binoculars, spotting scopes and magnifying glasses so that visitors can observe details that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Culture and history

More than 300 historic buildings are listed in Isère; in addition, there are 125 sites bearing the “Patrimoine en Isère” label and 70 museums. A further 800 fortified structures and hundreds of castles have been recorded.

The Château du Gouvernement in Saint-Pierre-d’Entremont, Isère, was built in the early 14th century. In the late 19th century, Proveysieux became a meeting place and source of inspiration for landscape painters from the Grenoble area. In the late 11th century, Saint Bruno founded the Carthusian order and its first monastery in the Chartreuse mountains.

The Hameau du Ranc bears witness to life in times gone by through the ruins of former houses, old meadows and former charcoal-burning sites; there is also a picnic table there. Pont-en-Royans is known for its houses suspended above the Bourne and has a water museum in the town centre.

Cycling

In Isère, 370 kilometres of greenways and cycle routes extend between the banks of the Rhône and the passes of Oisans. In addition, Isère has 21 notable cycling passes and climbs spread over 290 kilometres.

Twenty-one signposted cycling circuits run for a total of 956 kilometres along departmental and municipal roads. Isère Attractivité has also developed 18 secure leisure routes for electrically assisted bicycles and electrically assisted mountain bikes; accompanying services include charging, parking and e-bike rental.
