Huez is the original village of the Alpe d'Huez resort. If you are staying in Huez, you may wish to book a hotel.
Culture and History
The Musée d'histoire et d'archéologie de l'Alpe d'Huez has been designated a “Musée de France” since 17 September 2003. The “Argenteria de Brandis” exhibition uses information panels, exhibits and models to illustrate the everyday life of miners and their families, including ore sorting and washing, crafts, religion and leisure activities.
The Saint-Ferréol Church in Huez dates back to the 11th century and is mentioned as early as 1058. It is open every day throughout the year. In the centre of the village, a fortified house known as the “Château” stands on a hill. Historic covered washhouses have also been preserved: two date from 1733, and another from 1806. The Sainte-Anne Church was built in the heart of the village of Huez at the end of the 19th century.
The medieval archaeological site of Brandes was classified as a “Monument historique” in 1993. From the 12th to the 14th century, Brandes was a village inhabited by silver miners. The site stretches for almost one kilometre and includes residential buildings, religious and civic structures, as well as work areas for crushing, grinding and washing ore. During the summer season, guided tours are available to the public and groups by reservation.
Nature
The Plateau de Roche Noire ZNIEFF area lies in the municipalities of Huez and Oz and encompasses around fifty peat bogs, marshes and small bodies of water with a diverse range of plant life. In Huez and Oz, the area is also home to a diverse amphibian population; its waters contain a population of Arctic char.
Walks
The cultural orienteering course “Parcours d'orientation patrimoine - Huez Village” begins next to the Huez Express car park in Huez, passes through the lanes of Huez village and introduces visitors to the local heritage, the “d'Huizats” and the Sarenne gorges.
The walk “Visite du village d'Huez et des Moulins de Sarenne” combines the flower-decorated lanes of the village with the remains of water mills.
