Mont-de-Lans is located in the Massif de l’Oisans on the edge of Écrins National Park at an altitude of 1,285 metres. Above the village, the walk to the Croix du Sert leads to panoramic views over the Romanche Valley, Lac du Chambon and the surrounding mountains; the viewpoint can be reached on foot in less than ten minutes from the village.
Routes and Connections
At the Chambon dam, a turn-off from the D213 leads directly to Mont-de-Lans and the resort of Les Deux Alpes. From this resort, Mont-de-Lans can be reached by the Mont de Lans chairlift or a free shuttle.
Culture and History
Chasal Lento is a museum and café in the centre of Mont-de-Lans village where visitors can discover the local heritage. It presents the history of the people of the region, including the Roman era, peddlers, the construction of the Chambon dam and the early years of Les Deux Alpes.
The Porte romaine de Bons and the associated remains of the Roman road were listed as historic monuments by a decree dated 18 April 2014. The remains of the Roman road next to the Porte romaine de Bons form part of a continuous, longer section of the Roman road over the Lautaret. The Porte romaine de Bons is an arched structure carved out of chlorite schist above the Romanche. In the hamlet of Bons stands a chapel dating from 1893.
Village Life and Hiking Trails
Rando'Nature et Patrimoine is a guided discovery hike on the Mont-de-Lans slope, showcasing the local fauna, flora and the history of the village. The guided route leads to the Chasal Lento café-museum in Mont-de-Lans village.
The small market in Mont-de-Lans village takes place every Wednesday morning in the square in front of the town hall. In addition to fruit and vegetables, it offers mountain products and small handicrafts.
In Le Ponteil, former farm tracks are now hiking trails.
