History and Culture

Domène is home to a Benedictine priory dating back to the agricultural and religious era around the year 1000. The former priory church of this Benedictine priory is dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. At the end of the 19th century, the discovery of “white coal,” meaning the use of hydropower, changed the historical context of Domène in the region.

Markets and Leisure

The Domène market was established in 1869 and has taken place on Thursdays ever since in the town center on Place Stalingrad, also known as Place de la Mairie, in front of the town hall. The weekly open-air market takes place every Thursday morning; additional stalls can be found on Place de l’église. An average of 65 vendors take part. The Sunday “Petit marché” also takes place on Place Stalingrad and includes a few food stalls.

The Coubertin outdoor swimming pool has two pools and a shallow outdoor pool surrounded by lawns; it is open only in summer. During the summer season, swimming is continuously supervised by state-qualified lifeguards. In July and August, water aerobics classes are regularly held for seniors and a wider audience.
