In Frýdek-Místek District, the winter offerings of the Moravian-Silesian Beskids combine with distinctive mountains and a rich cultural heritage. The Morávka-Sviňorky ski area has two snow-covered slopes: a 600-metre red slope and a 300-metre blue slope.

Winter and mountains

Downhill skiing is possible in the Beskids area of the district. In addition to the two snow-covered slopes, Morávka-Sviňorky offers ski school lessons and equipment rental. There is also horse-drawn sleigh transport from the car park to the slopes.

Lysá hora reaches 1,323 metres and has several ascent routes. The route from Papežov near Krásná to Lysá hora is fully asphalted and is described as the only route suitable for road cyclists.

Ostravice is considered a frequent starting point for the ascent of Lysá hora and can be reached by train from Frýdek-Místek.

Another active leisure option in the Beskids area of the district is paragliding. Water sports are possible at the Žermanice Reservoir.

Natural environment

The Beskids Protected Landscape Area covers approximately 43 percent of Frýdek-Místek District. Forests account for 51 percent of the district’s area, and therefore more than half.

Frýdek-Místek District combines broad and enclosed valleys, mountains in the Moravian-Silesian Beskids, and numerous historical and cultural monuments that promote tourism.

The wider area of the Beskids Protected Landscape Area is considered a landscape of mountain ridges, deep valleys, extensive forests, orchid-rich meadows, and sheep pastures.

Culture and history

Frýdek-Místek has two restored historic town centres. Frýdek-Místek District also has the largest number of wooden churches in the Czech Republic.

The Beskids Museum has a permanent exhibition in Frýdek Castle. It presents traditional crafts and the way of life of people at the foot of the Beskids.

The collection includes more than 800 exhibits, including a loom, a traditional Wallachian room, and information about sheep farming.

The museum is housed in Frýdek Castle; there you can visit the Knights’ Hall, climb the observation tower, and visit the Chapel of Saint Barbara.

The natural history department of the Beskids Museum presents 200 animals from the Beskids, including lynx, wolf, and bear.

The Basilica of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Frýdek-Místek was an important pilgrimage centre in Silesia. It is visible from Lysá hora and Radhošť.

The Church of Saint John and Saint Paul is located in Místek.

The tower of Hukvaldy Castle offers views towards the Beskids, Kopřivnice, Příbor, Fryčovice, and Ostrava.

Hukvaldy Castle was probably built in the first half of the 13th century and apparently was never conquered.

The best-preserved structure of Hukvaldy Castle is the Chapel of Saint Andrew.
