The Hukvaldy Game Reserve lies around the ruins of Hukvaldy Castle, covers 440 hectares, and a 220-hectare section is designated as a European protected area. Hradní vrch Hukvaldy was designated a natural monument in 1999; the 77-hectare protected area preserves beech stands and the landscape design of the historic game reserve.
Nature
The Hukvaldy Game Reserve is open year-round, and visitors can observe fallow deer and mouflon. The Hradní vrch educational trail is a 2 km circular route from the square in Hukvaldy through the game reserve gate to the castle ruins and back.
Culture
Hukvaldy Castle serves as a center of cultural life. Its grounds and the adjoining game reserve host the international Janáček’s Hukvaldy music festival every year.
The Leoš Janáček Memorial preserves the reception room, bedroom, and kitchen as they were during Janáček’s lifetime. The game reserve also features a bronze statue of the vixen Bystrouška, erected in June 1959 to commemorate the premiere of Janáček’s opera “The Cunning Little Vixen” (“Příhody lišky Bystroušky”). The Church of Saint Maximilian in Hukvaldy is open to visitors; Leoš Janáček played the organ there.
Hukvaldy Castle is open to the public from April to October.
Walking and Cycling Routes
The educational circular trail “Leoš Janáček očima dětí” is 8.3 km long and has 13 information panels about Leoš Janáček, Hukvaldy, and Dolní Sklenov. Most of the trail can be completed by bicycle or with a sports stroller. The “Okolo Hukvald” route begins and ends at Leoš Janáček’s birthplace and is 8.6 km long.
The 6001 cycling circuit “Hukvaldy–Kopřivnice–Příbor” is 9.5 km long, suitable for trekking bikes and mountain bikes, and gives cyclists access to the Větřkovice Reservoir from the direction of Hukvaldy and Příbor.
More Destinations
Hukvaldský Stonehenge is a rest area at a weir with symbolically arranged stones associated with the work of Leoš Janáček. The site also includes an interactive acoustic element called a dendraphone.
Tropic Hukvaldy features an Asian garden, tropical greenhouses with exotic plants and animals, and a seasonal exhibition of live butterflies.
Getting There and Refreshments
A direct bus connection from Ostrava serves the “Hukvaldy, hotel” stop. At Hostinec U Štamgastů, visitors can taste local Hukvaldy yeast beer.
