Culture

The Porta Dojona is part of the city's history; it was part of a fortified complex at the northeastern corner of the old city wall of Belluno. Its inner arch was built in 1289 by Vecello da Cusighe for the bishop and count Adalgerio da Villalta. The Torrione is the only surviving element of the old city wall of Belluno; construction began in 1481 under the Venetian rector Perazzo Malipiero and was completed in 1489 by Luca Foscarini.

The Teatro Comunale is a building constructed in the neoclassical style based on a design by Giuseppe Segusini from the years 1833 to 1835. The Teatro Comunale features nine stone and bronze busts of Venetian rectors from the 16th and 17th centuries. In 1776, the Palazzo Fulcis acquired its present form through the work of the architect Valentino Alpago-Novello, who connected three previously separate buildings. The Palazzo Fulcis preserves significant stucco decorations from the 17th and 18th centuries.

The Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta in Belluno dates from the 16th century, while the Palazzo dei Rettori dates from the 15th century. The Museo Civico preserves archaeological finds from Belluno's early history and from the Roman Empire. The Museo Etnografico del Parco presents permanent and temporary exhibitions about the lives of people in the mountains. An official map brings together information on 69 museums in the Province of Belluno.

Getting there and orientation

Belluno is approximately one hour by car from Venice via the A27 motorway. Belluno railway station is located on the Calalzo–Padua and Belluno–Conegliano railway lines. The bus station is opposite the railway station; Dolomitibus provides connections from throughout the province as well as to places inland.

The IAT office in Belluno provides information about trekking and cycling routes in Valbelluna and in the Belluno Dolomites National Park. Tourist travel guides, maps and information brochures are also available there. The Gran Tour delle Dolomiti Bellunesi is an independent route associated with the city as a bikepacking circuit starting and ending in Belluno.

Cuisine

Piave DOP is one of the traditional cheeses of the Belluno area. Cheese from the Belluno area can be sampled directly at mountain pastures and local dairies. Il Cantiere del Gusto in Belluno prepares dishes made from local products sourced through short supply chains; its offering aims to promote the Belluno area through local gastronomic specialities.
