Landscape and Trails around Fonzaso
The Covolo di San Michele includes a chapel dedicated to Saint Michael and a statue of the Virgin Mary in an artificially created niche. The Covolo di San Michele lies at an altitude of around 550 m in an open, commanding position overlooking the Fonzaso basin. At the Covolo di San Michele, religious landmarks meet views across the basin.
The route to Campon d’Avena starts at the car park behind Fonzaso town hall. It first passes through the historic town centre along Via Mezzaterra and Via Calzen, then continues along the old mule track of Galina. At Cima Loreto, the route to Campon d’Avena opens up to views over the Cismon Valley and the Monte Grappa massif.
Walks and Longer Trails
The Giro dei Loch is a 5.50 km communal recreational walk for pupils of Fonzaso’s primary and lower secondary schools. The route passes through the town’s streets and leads to the Loch di Fonzaso.
The Cammino Retico is a roughly 170 km trail that can be walked in seven days, passing through ten municipalities in Veneto and Trentino. The Cammino Retico also passes through the historic town centres of Fonzaso, Arsiè, Seren del Grappa, Cesiomaggiore, Feltre and Pedavena.
Climbing at Falesia di Fonzaso
Falesia di Fonzaso offers around 40 technical climbing routes on crimps and in pockets. The approach to Falesia di Fonzaso follows the signs to the Eremo di San Micèl and takes about 20 minutes. For climbers, the approximately 20-minute approach forms part of the time required for a visit to the crag.
History and Architecture
The Roman Via Paolina, a branch of the Via Claudia Augusta Altinate, ran through the Fonzaso area. Villa De Pantz in the main town of Fonzaso is one of the most significant surviving architectural examples of the town’s flourishing period in the 18th century.
At the Festa dell'Uva 2025 in Fonzaso, a traditional parade with allegorical floats through the town’s streets was announced for Sunday, 28 September 2025.
Wine and Products
Winegrowing in the Fonzaso area is an old tradition that has been preserved to this day. At 1,497 m, Malga Campon is an agricultural guest establishment with a restaurant as well as a cheese dairy selling dairy products and cured meats.
Getting Around by Road
The SS 50 del Grappa e di Passo Rolle connects Fonzaso westwards with Primiero and eastwards with Feltre and Belluno; Feltre is 9 km and Belluno 40 km from Fonzaso.
