The Church of Santa Maria Maddalena is located in Rocca’s main square and is accessible to people with disabilities. The church was built in the Gothic style in 1442 and consecrated on 2 October 1494. The bell tower of Santa Maria Maddalena was built in 1530.
Sottoguda also has a historic church. The Church of Sottoguda dates back to the 15th century and is located in the main square in the centre of Sottoguda. The Church of Sottoguda is dedicated to Saints Fabian, Sebastian and Roch.
Mountain Landscapes and Trails on the Marmolada
The Serrai di Sottoguda nature reserve stretches for approximately two kilometres between Sottoguda and Malga Ciapela at the foot of the Marmolada. The Val Ombretta valley is also located in the municipality of Rocca Pietore, between the Fop mountains and the Marmolada. Val Ombretta belongs to the second of the nine officially recognised and protected systems of the Dolomites, the Marmolada system.
The route to the Centro Geografico delle Dolomiti begins near the campsite in Malga Ciapela. The route follows a paved road and takes approximately 20 minutes to reach Malga Gran Pian, then continues along a wide path to Malga Ombretta. The hike to the Centro Geografico delle Dolomiti is suitable for adults and children and offers several refreshment options along the route.
The totem on the route to the Centro Geografico delle Dolomiti was handmade by local artisans and inaugurated on 24 June 2017.
The Marmolada cable car travels from Malga Ciapela to the summit of the Marmolada in 12 minutes.
Museums and Craftsmanship in Sottoguda
The Carlo Delcroix Multimedia Centre in Sottoguda is housed in the former primary school building and is dedicated to the First World War. The Carlo Delcroix Multimedia Centre presents images and films about events of the First World War on touchscreens. The Carlo Delcroix Multimedia Centre also contains a detailed relief model of the surrounding area, including Rocca Pietore, Sottoguda, the Padon area, Fedaia and the Marmolada.
The Marmolada First World War Museum on Punta Serauta is the highest-altitude museum in Europe and is located directly at sites where First World War battles took place. In summer, the galleries, trenches and positions outside the Marmolada First World War Museum can be visited via a short secured footpath.
Visitors can visit the craft workshops in Pian di Sottoguda. The craft workshops in Pian di Sottoguda are internationally known for their work with wrought iron and wood.
Ladin Cuisine
Ladin cuisine in the Rocca Pietore area includes Casonzèi, also known as Casunziei. These are crescent-shaped egg pasta filled with spinach and ricotta, pumpkin, beetroot or potatoes.
