There are around 60 wall frescoes in Cibiana di Cadore. Italian and foreign artists painted the murals; they depict the history of the village. The murals of Cibiana can be visited on foot.

Campo Base is Reinhold Messner’s second museum in Cibiana di Cadore, after the museum on Monte Rite. Campo Base was conceived as a starting point for an intellectual ascent through Cibiana’s art and culture and through the history of mountaineering. The Messner Mountain Museum preserves fossils documenting the early formation of dolomite rock. These include Claraia shell fossils from 250 million years ago and cycad fossils from 240 million years ago.

The development of the Rite Valley was closely linked to ironworking; mines were already active there in 1420. Cibiana developed a distinctive craft from its iron processing for the production of keys. The Museo del Ferro e della Chiave displays mining, iron processing and objects made of iron on two floors. The Museo del Ferro e della Chiave is located near the Ufficio delle Miniere in the Cibiana di Sotto district. Bilingual Italian-English panels explain the technical development of processing metal into everyday objects. In Cibiana, the famous “scarpete,” slippers made of cord and velvet, are produced entirely by hand by women.

Monte Rite: Fortress and Mountain Trails

The Fortezza Cadore-Maè was built on Monte Rite at an altitude of 2,181 metres between 1912 and 1914. The fortress owes its present-day appearance to its strategic importance during the two world wars. Monte Rite is located in the immediate vicinity of Cibiana.

The route to Monte Rite from Cibiana follows CAI Trail 479, which is also known as the Sentiero del Col d’Orlando. The route to Monte Rite is considered wide and well marked. The summit of Monte Rite can be reached via natural trails through the forest and an ascent of around 7 kilometres. The Alta Via No. 3 of the Dolomites crosses Monte Rite.

In winter, Cibiana offers an illuminated 2-kilometre-long cross-country ski trail. Cross-country skiing under the starry sky is possible on this trail. The “Cibiana e i Murales” cycling tour starts in Cibiana di Cadore. The Laghetti delle Tose park is located in the surrounding area of Cibiana.
