Between the Pass and Historic Trails

Colle Santa Lucia combines mountain landscapes, the history of its trails and cultural heritage. The eastern half of Passo Giau lies in the municipality of Colle Santa Lucia. The pass is used by hikers, cyclists and motorcyclists. Colle Santa Lucia also offers panoramic views over Val Fiorentina, with Pelmo and Civetta in the background.

The proposed section of the Strada de la Vena runs between Colle Santa Lucia and Castello di Andraz. At Maso di Troi, in the easternmost section of the Strada de la Vena, visitors can see the remains of old mines and a restored mine entrance. It is possible to walk a few dozen metres into the entrance.

The higher historic route of the Strada de la Vena also leads to Pianaz and can be walked in 5–6 hours. The orange route of the Alta Via dell’Orso begins in the historic centre of Colle Santa Lucia. The green route of the Alta Via dell’Orso begins at Rifugio Fedare on Passo Giau. Independently of these routes, CAI trail 463 leads from Colle Santa Lucia to Rifugio Fedare; the trail is 7.5 km long.

Culture in the Historic Centre

Several examples of regional history can be found in the townscape of Colle Santa Lucia. The Meridiana is a fresco sundial dating from 1606 in the Chiesa di S. Lucia at Via Villagrande 29 in Colle Santa Lucia.

Cesa de Jan was built between the late 16th and early 17th centuries by the Chizzali brothers. The year 1612 is displayed above the entrance. Cesa de Jan houses permanent exhibitions on the history, customs and traditions of the Colle area.

Casa Piazza is a building on the main street of the historic centre of Villagrande in Colle Santa Lucia. Casa Piazza can be recognised by a round arch that allows passage along a mule-track route.

The Mining History of the Miniere del Fursil

The history of mining includes the Miniera dei Vauz, a 17th-century mine in the area of the Miniere del Fursil. The entrance to the Miniera dei Vauz can be reached by minibus. A guide then accompanies visitors on the short tour inside the mine.

The iron-bearing ore extracted in the Miniere del Fursil was suitable for making weapons because of its high value. Together with the remains of old mines at Maso di Troi, this mining history forms a distinct focus among the region’s heritage sites.
