Nature

The Demänovská dolina Nature Reserve protects limestone cliffs with preserved vegetation, as well as numerous protected, endangered and endemic plant species. The serpentine path from the car park to Demänovská jaskyňa slobody is approximately 400 metres long, climbs 67 metres in elevation and takes 10 to 15 minutes. An educational trail runs along the ascent route.

The Hrádocké arboretum in Liptovský Hrádok is accessible year-round as a natural attraction with a simple walking circuit and is located directly in the town. The exhibition “Kapitoly z histórie mesta” at the Janko Kráľ Museum is located in the historic rooms of the first county house and the adjoining Strauss House on Námestie osloboditeľov. It traces more than seven centuries of Liptovský Mikuláš’s history – from the first mention of Svätý Mikuláš to the end of the Second World War.

In the Old Evangelical Parish House, Hodžova fara, the exhibition “Tatrín a Žiadosti slovenského národa” explores the Tatrín association, its role as a precursor to Matica slovenská, and the preparation and proclamation of the “Žiadosti slovenského národa” of 1848.

The Slovenské múzeum ochrany prírody a jaskyniarstva in Liptovský Mikuláš provides knowledge about caves, karst landscapes, minerals and rare plant and animal species through interactive exhibitions. The historic centre of Liptovský Mikuláš presents twelve remarkable places connected with local history, notable personalities and works of art.

The Múzeum liptovskej dediny in Pribylina documents the folk architecture of the Liptov region and is located beneath the southern slopes of the Western Tatras. Visitors can learn about and try traditional crafts such as wirework, blue dyeing, blacksmithing, pottery and spinning.

Havránok offers cultural events during the summer season, including fencing duels, depictions of Celtic religious ceremonies and various craft activities.

Events and Regional Cuisine

The Folklórny festival Východná takes place annually on the first weekend of July; at that time, Východná becomes a centre of Slovak culture and living folk traditions. The annual programme also includes a children’s programme with interactive activities, a craft school, performances by children and dance workshops.

Traditional cuisine from the Liptov region is served at the Kolibas Strachanovka and Liptovský dvor in Liptovský Ján.
