Maluzina: Nature, Cave and Mining History

Malužiná is located in the eastern part of the Liptovská kotlina basin, in a mountainous area on the northern slopes of the Nízke Tatry. The Ohnište upland, which is a national nature reserve, lies west of Malužiná.

Nature

Malužinská jaskyňa is located above Malužiná on the left side of the Bocianska dolina valley and was formed in dolomite rock. The cave is approximately 328 metres long, 250 metres of which are open to the public. Visiting Malužinská jaskyňa first involves an approximately ten-minute uphill walk, followed by a guided underground tour with helmets and headlamps.

The two underground attractions differ in their format: at the cave, the approximate ascent is followed by a guided tour with equipment, while the adit is described with its own walking information and a recommendation to reserve in advance. This keeps the duration, itinerary and organisational note separate.

History

Malužiná was established in the second half of the 18th century as a mining settlement around a copper hammer mill built in 1771. A glassworks operated in Malužiná from the 18th century until 1885.

The Roman Catholic Church of the “Elevation of the Holy Cross” in Malužiná dates from 1816. The former inn with a bowling alley, dating from the early 19th century, is a national cultural monument.

Culture and Visitor Information

The exhibition on mining and speleology is located in the main building of Speleocamping Malužiná, right next to the reception. It displays miners’ lamps, minerals and ores extracted in mines. The guided tour of the exhibition takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes.

Tickets for the cave, adit or exhibition can be purchased at the reception of Speleocamping at Malužiná 21. Visitor parking is located in front of the buffet at Malužiná 158, about 10 metres from the reception.

The accessible adit “Baňa Zubaustollen” is located at the beginning of the Malužinská dolina valley. From the reception of Speleocamping to the “Baňa Zubaustollen” adit in Malužinská dolina, it is just under 2 kilometres on foot. Advance reservations by telephone or email are recommended for visiting the “Baňa Zubaustollen” adit.

Routes

The “Chorupné cez Malužinský Tajch” route follows forest paths through Malužinská dolina to Malužinský Tajch and onward to Chorupné before returning to Malužiná.
