Dúbrava between the Low Tatras and mining history

Landscape

The Low Tatras form the dominant natural landscape of the municipality of Dúbrava and cover almost two thirds of its territory. On the main ridge of the Low Tatras, Chabenec reaches 1,955 metres above sea level at the southern boundary of the municipality of Dúbrava. The municipality is therefore characterised by an extensive mountain area and a named point on the main ridge.

The Dúbravka, the largest watercourse in this area, flows through the cadastral territory of Dúbrava. Dúbrava also belongs to the Natura 2000 site Nízke Tatry. The mountains, watercourses and protected natural area therefore collectively represent the geographical features of the locality.

Routes and connections

The Náučný chodník Banícka cesta is a 6.3-kilometre-long, easy educational and walking trail. It starts at Štátne majetky in Dúbrava. Along the trail through Dúbravská dolina, there are five information boards. The trail’s length, classification and starting point are therefore specified, as are the boards along the route.

Dúbrava is connected to Liptovský Mikuláš by a regular bus service. Access to Banícka faleska by car is also indicated; there is free parking in front of the mining buildings.

Culture and history

Banícka faleska serves as a memorial space displaying historical artefacts from the period when mining flourished in Dúbrava. The site therefore combines a memorial space with preserved evidence of the local mining history.

The Church of Kostol sv. Ondreja apoštola in Dúbrava dates from the 13th century. In the 17th century, it was remodelled and fortified in the Renaissance style. The interior contains remnants of Gothic wall paintings.

The Predpekelná section is also associated with the area’s mining heritage. There, eight miners from Dúbrava extracted antimony ore by blasting it with gunpowder and carrying it to the surface in wooden troughs.

Traditions and events

Old customs traditionally observed in Dúbrava included carrying the “Murieny” out of the village before Easter and drowning it in the water. They also included carrying out the Dedko, St John’s bonfires and other customs before Christmas. These traditional practices stand alongside the historical traces of mining and the church.

The children’s group of FSk Chabenec performs folklore programmes at events in Dúbrava and outside the municipality. The annual Deň baníckej obce Dúbrava was held in Dúbrava on 14 September 2024. Visitors were offered goulash, food and drink stalls, as well as craft stalls.
