Vychodna: Ski Hotel, High Tatras and Culture

The northern boundary of the Východná area lies in the High Tatras region. The Biely Váh flows through the area, while the Čierny Váh runs through the southern part of Východná.

Culture

Stanica Svet Martina Sabaku is a permanent exhibition of unusual works by Martin Sabaka in a specially designed hall at Farma Východná. Another cultural highlight is the Východná Folklore Festival. It was first held in 1953, is included in the programmes of the International Council of Organizations for Folklore Festivals and Folk Art (C.I.O.F.), and takes place annually on the first weekend of July. The festival includes dance, music, singing and creative handicraft workshops, as well as programmes for children.

The Ovenálie is also a recurring sheep-farming festival held in the Východná amphitheatre, traditionally taking place on the second Sunday in June. The Ovenálie features tastings of sheep cheese, bryndza and meat specialities; demonstrations of sheep cheese and bryndza production are also part of the festival.

The historic Magna Via road ran through Východná. The historic centre was declared a conservation area in 1991. This conservation area includes timber and masonry buildings in the oldest part of the village, with their gables facing the main road. Typical small houses in Východná were built of wood and have two small windows in the gable façade, a shingle roof and a covered area in front of the house.

The local architectural and museum heritage includes the Drevenica z Východnej and the východnianska múranica. The Drevenica z Východnej was built around 1910 and now serves as a museum with contemporary furnishings. The východnianska múranica was built in 1921 and also now serves as a museum with contemporary furnishings.

The evangelical church in Východná was built in 1926–1927 according to a design by the architect Michal Milan Harminc. Its Neo-Gothic façade has three-part pointed-arch windows and decorative buttresses. The altar is Neo-Gothic and contains an older painting of the Crucifixion by Karol Prúnyi.

Trails

The Rozhľadňa Májka lookout tower can be reached from the car park next to the main entrance to the Východná festival grounds via a short walk of approximately five minutes. There are wooden sculptures and a small children's playground on the grounds around the lookout tower.

The MTB route Horná nádrž Čierny Váh z Východnej starts in Východná and ends at the Čierny Váh reservoir. It is classified as moderately difficult and is 12.7 km long.

Getting there

Most long-distance buses stop in Východná. Regional buses also operate from Liptovský Mikuláš and Poprad. Východná railway station is located in the district of the same name, approximately 3.5 km from the village, and is directly connected by bus.
