Vavrisovo: Tatra Panorama, Nature and History

Vavrišovo lies in the eastern part of the Liptov Basin, in the valley of the Belá River. From Vavrišovo, there are panoramic views of the Low, Western and High Tatras.

Nature

The Natura 2000 site SKUEV0141 includes, among other areas, the cadastral territory of Vavrišovo. In the SKUEV0141 area, mountain watercourses and herbaceous vegetation along their banks are classified as habitat type 3220.

History

Vavrišovo was first mentioned in 1286 as the property of Mikuláš, son of Serefelov. In August 1709, as part of the estates’ uprisings of Francis II Rákóczi, a battle took place in the area of Vavrišovo between the insurgent Kuruc forces and the imperial troops, the Labancs; Vavrišovo was burned down in the process. The Museum of the Battle of Vavrišovo was established to commemorate the battle of August 1709.

Culture

The evangelical church in Vavrišovo is a neo-Romanesque building constructed between 1881 and 1884. Its entrance tower dates from 1928. The interior contains a neoclassical altar from the second half of the 19th century, as well as a pulpit featuring depictions of Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon. Vavrišovo is also home to distinctive Humná barns, whose unusual architecture helps shape the view of the entire landscape.

Things to do

Vavrišovo is a starting point for trips to the High Tatras. The Živá rieka trail is an easy walk along the river and is particularly suitable for an outing with children. It is accessible year-round, including during the winter closure of the marked hiking trails. For cycling enthusiasts, the educational Vlkolínec–Pribylina cycle route follows field roads through Liptovský Peter to Vavrišovo and continues from there to Pribylina, where it ends at the entrance to the Museum of the Liptov Village.
