Vazec: Cave, Folk Culture and Tradition

Važecká Cave is one of Slovakia’s national natural monuments. 235 m of the route are open to the public. It is also an important paleontological site for bones of the cave bear (Ursus spelaeus).

Culture

The Važec Museum of Folk Culture is located in one of the oldest brick houses in Važec. It presents the everyday life and housing, traditional clothing, agricultural work, folk crafts, as well as the customs and traditions of the inhabitants of Važec. The Važec Museum of Folk Culture features a model of Važec showing what the village looked like before its destruction by fire. Also on display is an exhibit from 1781 with its original decoration and the bride’s name.

Tradition

The Pentecost Sunday Omilienci procession is an archaic ritual procession of dance and song that takes place every Whit Sunday in Važec. Today’s procession begins at the upper end of Važec below the cemetery and ends in the square in front of the church with a performance and the symbolic opening of springs. Women who wear traditional dress and would like to sing can take part in the Omilienci procession.

History

In the Church of the Adoration of the Three Kings in Važec, a Gothic portal leads from the nave into the adjoining sacristy, which now serves as a confessional. It allegedly comes from the former church in Šoldov.

Jan Hála’s house is a national cultural monument, was built in 1923, and was the residence of the painter Jan Hála when he came to Važec.

Practical Information

The German war cemetery near Važec is located outside the municipality between Važec and Tatranská Štrba. The access route is signposted and leads to a large car park at the site. It is accessible via a circular path through eight cemeteries. The circular path then describes the access route through the eight cemeteries.
