Jamník: Accommodation in the Liptov Basin below the Western Tatras

Jamník was first mentioned in writing in 1346 under the name Yemnik. Its history can be traced through various surviving records.

Location

Jamník is located in the central part of the Liptov Basin in the valley of the Jamníček stream. Below the slopes of the Western Tatras, the village lies at an altitude of 700 metres above sea level.

History

From its foundation until 1848, Jamník was a subject village owned by nobles from Podtureň. This historical classification is one of the defining milestones in the village's history and complements the first written mention from 1346.

Culture

The cultural centre in Jamník was built in 1928 for the local reading association, which mainly organised theatre performances. Surviving records document 157 plays performed in Jamník.

The Evangelical church in Jamník was built in 1907 in the Neoclassical style. It has a hall with a barrel vault and a tower with a pyramidal roof projecting from the west façade. The altar featuring the painting „The Baptism of Christ“ dates from 1910 and is attributed to M. Mitrovský. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose.

Traditional crafts have also been passed down: linen was woven and shepherds' utensils such as črpáky and wooden spoons were made in Jamník until the middle of the 20th century. A fire destroyed the wooden school and the house of prayer. In the memories of subsequent generations of Jamník's residents, this fire remained known as the „great fire“.

Trails

In the past, hikes to Baranec were organised mainly from Jamník. Historically, hiking trails and paths were marked, particularly from the railway station in Podtureň via Jamník towards Baranec. Both accounts thus refer to the same mountain destination, but distinguish between organised hikes and the earlier marking of trails and paths.
