Závažná Poruba – Ski Opalisko, Nature and Culture

Above Závažná Poruba lies the Ski Opalisko ski resort, with cross-country and downhill slopes. The ski resort has drag lifts and a chairlift. Ski Opalisko also offers rental and servicing of ski equipment, snowboards, mountain bikes and other sports equipment.

Nature and Landscape

Also located above Závažná Poruba is Poludnica mountain, which is 1,549 metres high. It offers views of the Liptovská kotlina basin. Outside the built-up area, the cadastral territory of Závažná Poruba covers 1,856 hectares. It lies within the Nízke Tatry National Park, known as NAPANT for short, and includes nature protection zones from levels 1 to 5. The marked hiking trails in Závažná Poruba are also part of the Nízke Tatry National Park.

Culture and History

The House of Milan Rúfus contains a literary museum displaying the poet’s first manuscripts, portraits, photographs and a selection of his thoughts. Závažná Poruba is also home to the ECAV church, built in 1933 in the Neo-Gothic style.

The Základná škola Milana Rúfusa primary school includes a 42-metre-high bell tower. It was built in the Neo-Romanesque-Gothic style in 1911. The building of the Základná škola Milana Rúfusa itself is the former Evangelical elementary school. It was built in 1865, extended upwards in 1911 and expanded in 1967.

The House of Milan Rúfus is the house where the poet Milan Rúfus and his sister Oľga grew up.

Nature Trail and Local Attractions

The Stopy predkov na Veratíne nature trail is an approximately 4.6-kilometre-long, easy circular route starting at the car park below Ski Opalisko. The circuit takes approximately two to three hours with children. It leads to Celtic fortifications on Veratín, an 882-metre-high mountain. These fortifications stood there more than 2,000 years ago. Along the nature trail, five information panels explain the history of the Celtic fortifications as well as the local fauna and flora.

The Školská včelnica in Závažná Poruba includes a children’s educational trail. Guided tours with expert explanations and demonstrations of real beekeeping equipment are also available there. Another public facility is located at the Areál telesného pohybu Mateja Staroňa, known as AtpMS for short. Its sports facilities, including a children’s playground and other sports options, are open to the general public in summer and winter.
