Culture and History in Merano
Castello Principesco is located in the centre of Merano. You can reach Castello Principesco via Via Galilei or the arcades. In the 19th century, Castello Principesco was restored to recreate a historical late Gothic atmosphere; it was opened to the public in 1880. The arcades of Merano consist of an approximately 400-metre-long double row of buildings with low arcades, extending from Piazza Duomo to Piazza del Grano.

The Teatro Puccini was built in 1900 within 14 months. The building is characterised by Art Nouveau elements and ornaments; the interiors of the Teatro Puccini are also designed in the Art Nouveau style and provide the setting for concerts, theatre performances and other events. The synagogue on Via Schiller in Merano is still in use as an active place of worship.
Museums, Gardens and Promenades
The permanent exhibition at the Jewish Museum of Merano addresses the arrival and everyday life of Jewish families, their cultural achievements and contributions, their disenfranchisement and persecution under National Socialism, the destruction of the community, and its difficult reconstruction after the war. The tour at the Palais Mamming Museum ranges from prehistory to contemporary art and covers social and artistic areas. The Touriseum at Trauttmansdorff Castle presents 200 years of the history of tourism in Merano and the rest of South Tyrol through a variety of original exhibitions and multimedia presentations. The Touriseum can only be reached through the botanical gardens.
The Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle in Merano extend across 12 hectares of terrain with an elevation difference of 100 metres. The Tappeiner Promenade is one of the longest and most attractive high-level trails in Europe. The vegetation along the Tappeiner Promenade is characterised mainly by Mediterranean cypresses and pines.
Cycling Route and Recreation
The Val Passiria cycling route begins in the centre of Merano and follows the river with a gentle ascent to San Leonardo. Most of the Val Passiria cycling route is unpaved.
Terme Merano has 25 pools, a sauna area and a large outdoor park in the heart of the spa town of Merano. The main pool and the saltwater pool at Terme Merano are outdoors and can be used year-round. The main pool is 472 m² in size and has a temperature of 34 °C; the saltwater pool has a temperature of 35 °C.
Market, Festivals and Events
The Mercato Meranese brings together agriculture, crafts, tourism and urban life. Only food and craft products grown or produced in South Tyrol are offered at the Mercato Meranese. Since 2007, Asfaltart has transformed the city of Merano into a large open-air stage every year. The Festa dell'Uva di Merano has been celebrated since 1886 as a thanksgiving festival for the autumn harvest and includes traditional parades, culinary specialities and wine tastings. The Gran Premio Merano has been held since 1935 and traditionally takes place on the last Sunday in September.
