The landscape of Nals is shaped by extensive orchards and vineyards; apple cultivation is the most important agricultural activity. The landscape therefore has a clear agricultural focus that helps define the character of the village.
During guided visits to the Grieserhof orchards, guests learn more about the work behind the apple, traditions and old equipment, as well as modern technologies. The tour thus focuses both on traditional working methods and on current technical solutions in apple cultivation.
The Burgstalleck viewing platform above Nals offers panoramic views of the Adige Valley, the surrounding orchards and the mountain panorama of the Southern Alps. A panoramic view means a wide vista across several types of landscape; at Burgstalleck, the view encompasses the valley, cultivated landscape and mountain backdrop.
Churches, manor house and ruins
The parish church of St. Ulrich in Nalles was founded in the 12th century by St. Afra Abbey in Augsburg and has been the parish church of Nalles since 1910. Stachelburg Manor is an early Renaissance building from the 16th century and was converted into a traditional wine cellar. A manor house is a historic noble residence; the early Renaissance refers to an early phase of the Renaissance.
The Sacred Heart Church in the hamlet of Sirmian was built in 1843 and houses a Baroque altar dated 1713. The altar is therefore older than the church building. The Santa Croce Chapel is about a quarter of an hour’s walk from the centre of Nalles; it is mentioned in the parish archive of Tesimo as far back as 1713. The approximate quarter-hour walking time can be taken into account when planning this route.
The Church of Santa Apollonia stands on a prominent porphyry hill in Upper Sirmian and was built in the 12th or 13th century. Payersberg Ruins were built as a fortress in the first quarter of the 13th century. A fortress is a defensive structure; at Payersberg, the term refers to the building’s original function.
Hiking and cycling
The hike from Nalles to Katzenzungen Castle follows trails 2 and 17 through apple orchards to Katzenzungen Castle. Bus route 216 from Prissiano to Nalles can be used as a return option for the hike to Katzenzungen Castle.
In the Nalles area, the cycle path in the Adige Valley is regarded as a route that runs level along the Adige River for longer sections. The Via Claudia Augusta has only slight gradients and is considered a route suitable for all cyclists. Slight gradients mean that a route gains only a small amount of elevation. In the case of the Via Claudia Augusta, this characteristic is expressly linked to its suitability for all cyclists. When choosing a route, level river sections and slight gradients can therefore be considered as different criteria.
