Ulten between the High Trail and Stelvio National Park

The Ultner High Trail is an almost 50 km circular hike in the Ultental Valley. The route, marked with trail marker no. 12, can be completed in two to three days. With two hiking days, almost 50 km corresponds to approximately 25 km per day; over three days, the distance is spread across around 16 to 17 km daily. As a circular hike, the trail leads back to the starting point. The Ultner High Trail leads through the middle of Stelvio National Park to the Haselgruber Hut and the Haselgruber Lakes.

Churches and farming history

The Gothic Church of San Maurizio stands on a hill at an altitude of 1,632 m and is probably considered the oldest church in the valley. The Gothic Church of San Nicolò was first mentioned in records in 1338 and has a neo-Gothic winged altarpiece with remarkable sculptures. Gothic refers to a historical style in church architecture; neo-Gothic later revived this formal language. A winged altarpiece is an altar with laterally movable wings.

Traditional farm complexes in Ulten included a log-built firehouse constructed on masonry walls and a round-log hay barn. In the firehouse, the log construction on masonry walls was the main feature, while the hay barn was characterised by its round-log construction. Both buildings were covered with shingles. This construction method has been preserved to this day. Log construction refers to a structure made of logs laid one on top of another; shingles are flat pieces of wood used for roofing.

The Ultner Valley Museum in St. Nikolaus focuses on the former farming life of the Ultental Valley. A farmhouse parlour, a smoke kitchen, a sleeping chamber and a milk room are among the museum's rooms. A farmhouse parlour is the living room in a traditional farm building, while a smoke kitchen is used for smoking food. A sleeping chamber is a room for sleeping. Guided tours at the Ultner Valley Museum are available daily upon request.

The Lahnersäge Visitor Centre is located in St. Gertraud in a centuries-old sawmill. Until the 1980s, the farmers of the Ultental Valley brought their wood to this sawmill to be sawn. The visitor centre focuses on the importance and functions of the forest for people and nature. The historic sawmill thus also represents the former processing of wood in the Ultental Valley.

Summer on Schwemmalm, winter in the ski area

In summer, Schwemmalm is a popular meeting place for hikers, paragliders and mountain bikers. In winter, Schwemmalm is considered a snow-reliable ski area for experienced skiers and families. The season at Schwemmalm is therefore a key planning factor for the time of travel: different activities take centre stage in summer than in winter.
