The Sobrarbe-Pirineos UNESCO Global Geopark encompasses the entire Sobrarbe region in the north of the province of Huesca and offers more than 1,000 kilometres of well-maintained hiking trails.

Nature

The Parque Natural de la Sierra y Cañones de Guara covers 47,453 hectares. Its peripheral protected zone covers a further 33,286 hectares; elevations range from 430 to 2,077 metres.

The Parque Nacional de Ordesa y Monte Perdido is a 15,696-hectare national park in the province of Huesca. It is home to more than 1,500 species of Pyrenean flora.

Culture

The Parque Cultural del Río Vero offers guided tours of the Abrigo de Arpán, the rock shelters of Mallata, the rock shelters of Barfaluy and the Abrigo de Lecina Superior. The cultural park also has signposted thematic hiking and mountain-biking routes with direction and information signs, viewpoints and rest areas. Within a relatively small area, it brings together prehistoric art styles ranging from Palaeolithic art through Levantine art to schematic art.

A guided-tour service is still available for La Cartuja de las Fuentes. The complex is open to the public on Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays.

The Musée de Huesca, Catedral - Museo Diocesano, Museo Pedagógico de Aragón and Editorial Pirineo are located in the vicinity of Huesca. All four are museums.

Routes and History

The Monte Irazo position on the Ruta Orwell can be reached via a path that begins on the A-129 road between Leciñena and Alcubierre at kilometre 34.6.

The Camino de Montserrat, also known as the Camino Catalán, crosses Aragón towards Huesca, where it connects with the traditional route to Santiago de Compostela.

The Frente de los Monegros route is Aragón’s first route dedicated to democratic remembrance. Along the route, visitors can explore trenches, casemates, bunkers and parapets mentioned by Orwell in his work “Homage to Catalonia”.
