Canfranc: Way of St James, Castles and Nature
Accommodation in Canfranc
The Way of St James reaches Canfranc; the origins of the town are linked to the pilgrimage to Santiago. The stage from Somport to Jaca leads to Canfranc-Pueblo and crosses the Aragón on a medieval bridge next to the cemetery. The route therefore connects the town with a specific section of the pilgrimage route and a historic crossing.
When comparing accommodation in Canfranc for a skiing holiday, travel dates, room category and cancellation policies may be given different priorities. Check these details carefully according to your travel period and preferred room category so that the offers remain comparable based on the same criteria.
Culture
The Puente de los Peregrinos lies on the Way of St James. In the mid-16th century, don Blasco de Les founded a religious and social institution in Canfranc with a church, a hospital for the poor and pilgrims, and a house for eight clergymen. The Iglesia de la Trinidad emerged from this foundation.
Of the Iglesia de la Trinidad, the presbytery and the façade of the chapel beneath the tower have in particular been preserved. The façade is considered an example of Renaissance architecture. In the Iglesia de la Asunción, Baroque altarpieces survived the fire thanks to the assistance of the town's residents.
The fortifications, too, span different periods: the Castillo de Canfranc developed from a medieval defensive tower and received an irregularly laid-out fortified area in 1592. In the same year, Tiburcio Spannocchi built the Torre de la Espelunca as a watchtower on the old road from France. The Castillo is included in Aragon's list of castles classified as Bienes de Interés Cultural.
The historical points of reference differ in their function: the foundation refers to religious and social tasks, the churches to preserved furnishings and architectural elements, and the towers and fortified area to protection and surveillance along former transport routes.
Nature
The Reserva micológica de Canfranc serves scientific communication, environmental education and nature conservation. In the arboretum, an approximately 15-minute botanical walk leads through a forest. Along the way, examples of many tree species from the mountains of Canfranc and the Pyrenees can be seen. For planning your day, the nature attractions clearly differ in format: the short walk is followed by an offering that identifies communication and conservation as its central tasks.
Trails
The GR 11.1 leads from Canfranc along the main road to Estación and crosses the Puente de Arriba on the way. From there, the old Way of St James, GR 65.3, runs through forests and former orchards to Canfranc-Estación.
The trees of Árboles con Historia are marked with labelled posts and information boards, as well as QR codes that can be used to access information about the individual trees.
