Sahún: Mountain Trails, Cultural Heritage and Festivals
Some quieter circular walks as well as fast, more challenging ascents begin and end in Sahún. The S-6 Sahún–Ibones de Barbarisa hiking trail climbs near the Barranco Surri to the Cabaña d’Es Prats mountain hut. After the pass, the Villanova–Sahún–Sesué circular route descends to Sahún along a comfortable path through the Barranco Surri.

Culture and History
The Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Guayente is a historic complex with a church, a defensive tower, an entrance portal and a courtyard on a steep rocky slope. The church dates from the 16th century and was extensively rebuilt in the 18th century. Inside, it contains a Renaissance altarpiece with ten polychrome wooden reliefs depicting episodes from the life of the Virgin Mary.
The Ruta de las Tradiciones passes through the three districts of the municipality of Sahún – Eriste, Eresué and Sahún – and focuses on local customs, traditions and crafts practised in the past.
The churches of Esglesia de Sant Esteve de Ginast, Pilaret de Sant Urbà, Esglesia de Sant Climent and Chapelle Notre-Dame de Meyabat are located in the wider regional surroundings of Sahún.
Festivals and Events
In Sahún, Les Falles are lit every year on the evening of 23 June as an ancient tradition. The municipality considers the custom part of its cultural heritage; in 2016, it was declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The classical music festival “Músicas en la cima”, organised by the municipality of Sahún, takes place every summer. Since 1994, it has been held in the churches of Eriste, Sahún, Eresué and Guayente, as well as in nearby outdoor locations.
Since 2020, Sahún has hosted the ERESER environmental days. They include lectures and outdoor activities on the relationship between human impacts and high-mountain ecosystems. During the patron saint festivals, the Ball del Sombrers dance takes place every year on 8 September in front of the Santuario de Guayente.
The local tradition of “pela del albá” in Sahún involves stripping birch bark, which is dried and pressed in June.
