Benasque – Nature, Trails and Culture in the Valley
Accommodation in Benasque
The Posets-Maladeta Nature Park includes, among other areas, the municipality of Benasque and covers 33,267 hectares. The Valle de Benasque is home to glacial lakes such as Cregüeña and Batisielles, as well as numerous waterfalls. At the entrance to the nature park, in the centre of Benasque, you will find the Centro de Interpretación de la Naturaleza de Benasque.
Nature
The landscape of the Valle de Benasque takes a variety of forms: glacial lakes and waterfalls are just as much a part of it as the expansive area of the nature park. Anyone wishing to organise the town and its surroundings by theme will find a clear transition here between natural areas, valley trails and the built-up town centre.
Getting around
The hiking trail network in the Valle de Benasque includes restored historic paths as well as well-developed and signposted routes. The trails range from easy family walks to challenging routes leading to mountain streams, meltwater waterfalls and ibones below the highest peaks. The different trail lengths and difficulty levels make it easier to distinguish possible activities by their character and scope.
In the nearby area, the Ésera River offers family-friendly and more challenging white-water sections. Canoeing is also possible on the calm waters of Lake Eriste. Special access conditions apply to the Besurta, Vallibierna and Espigantosa areas from 20 June to 13 September 2026: access by private vehicle is prohibited during this period; they can only be reached on foot or by public transport such as bus or taxi.
Townscape
The centre of Benasque is characterised by narrow, paved lanes and stone houses. These features give the townscape a clearly recognisable built structure that differs from the open natural areas of the Valle de Benasque.
Culture
The Palacio de los Condes de Ribagorza, a Renaissance building dating from the mid-16th century, stands on Calle Mayor. In 2005, the Palacio became municipal property and now serves as the home of the Centro Cultural Palacio de los Condes de Ribagorza.
Casa Juste is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) and classified as a castle-palace. At the same time, it is a fortified tower attached to a rectangular residential building in the centre of Benasque. The surviving remains of the Castillo de Benasque include recognisable entrances, the main gate, a cistern and the square floor plan of the main tower. The Castillo site is located on a rocky outcrop north of the town centre, on the right-hand side of the road to Cerler.
Other destinations: Sahún, Villanova, Panticosa, Jaca, Canfranc, Sesué and Biescas.
Traditions and cuisine
Local traditions include the Ball de BenĂ s, a traditional dance performed by the masters of ceremonies. During the dance, those responsible for organising the current year's festivities hand over this role to those responsible for the following year.
The mountain cuisine of the Valle de Benasque includes seasonal mushrooms, cured meats, cheese and meat from the valley, which can be sampled at certain times of the year.
