Culture and history in Amerang and Neubeuern
Amerang offers different ways to explore history. The museum at Amerang Castle provides insights into the castle’s architecture and the history of the noble family. The Amerang Farmhouse Museum, run by the District of Upper Bavaria, showcases farmhouses, craft buildings and technical installations from the Chiemgau region. Castle history and rural architecture, crafts and technology are presented as distinct themes.
The Amerang open-air museum offers individual guided tours and programs for groups; advance arrangements may be required for group programs. Between Amerang and Halfing, the moorland trail, established in 2010, explains how the moorland formed after the Ice Age and what animal and plant life is native there. Its themes range from architecture and everyday history to the development of a landscape.
In Neubeuern, the 11-stop “In the Footsteps of the Boatmen” trail commemorates the history of shipping on the Inn. The museum in the Kulturhaus in the market town tells the story of the town’s past. Every summer, the annual market illumination transforms the historic market square into a festival of light with thousands of candles; it is one of the traditional events in the Upper Bavarian Inn Valley. If you are planning a trip specifically for this event, check the dates in advance. Hartmannsberg Castle is also a cultural venue for concerts and exhibitions. It is not open to the public and cannot be visited outside of events.
Landscape, moorland and mountains
The “Gletscherschliff” east of the Fischbach district is a natural monument and geological site. During the Ice Age, the Inn Glacier smoothed the rocks there; they are well preserved and can be visited. Walks in the “Freimoos” landscape conservation area are considered particularly appealing. Another geological landmark is the millstone quarry at Hinterhör, one of Bavaria’s 100 most significant geological sites. Material for sharpening and millstones was quarried there from 1572 to 1860; today, the quarry is a tourist highlight because of the distinctive surface structure of its rock walls.
Activities at Hartsee vary by season. In summer, the lake is ideal for swimming. The Hartsee recreation area has children’s play equipment, two beach volleyball courts, a basketball court and a mini football pitch. In winter, people go ice skating and play Bavarian curling on Hartsee.
For challenging hikes, the Wendelstein–Hochsalwand circular route BR1 runs from the valley station of the Wendelsteinbahn in Brannenburg via the Zeller Scharte to the summits of the Wendelstein and Hochsalwand. Themed Wendelstein trails also lead from Brannenburg, Bad Feilnbach, Bayrischzell and Fischbachau to the Wendelstein; there are also routes to nearby peaks and a geology circular trail. At 300 metres long, the Wendelstein Cave is Germany’s highest show cave. Four interactive information stations cover geology, biology, psychology and philosophy.
Getting around and finding accommodation
The Wendelstein Ring Line, MVV route 349, operates from 1 May to 8 November. It serves numerous starting points for hikes around the Wendelstein and connects, among other places, Flintsbach am Inn, Brannenburg, Bad Feilnbach, Fischbachau, Bayrischzell and Schliersee. Seasonal timetables and services may change, so check the current timetable before travelling.
In the Rosenheim district, guest cards may allow overnight guests to use local public transport in their region free of charge. In the MVV, this applies to all integrated modes of transport and to second-class regional trains. If you plan to use this option during your stay, check the guest card’s regional validity. Event dates and timetables are especially important if they are the focus of your trip.
