The Mangfall, cycle route and railway line

The 66 km-long Mangfall Cycle Route runs southeast from Munich to Rosenheim and follows the Mangfall directly from Feldkirchen-Westerham onwards. The 66 kilometres refer to the total length of the route; its connection with the town lies in the stretch along the Mangfall. This makes it possible to consider the cycle route as a reason for travelling in its own right, without confusing the total length with a single section.

The town’s rail connection is also clear: as of 18 June 2024, Feldkirchen-Westerham is a station on the Munich–Holzkirchen–Rosenheim railway line. Check the current timetable for your travel date if you would like to include rail travel in your plans.

Sun-seekers gather on the Mangfall’s gravel banks, where the water is shallow. So, as well as the cycle route, the gravel banks offer another way to enjoy leisure time along the Mangfall.

Local history and trails

The pilgrimage church of the Assumption of Mary in Oberreit houses a Late Gothic carved votive image dating from around 1470. The date “around 1470” is approximate; “Late Gothic” classifies the image in art-historical terms. Altenburg is the ancestral castle of the Vagen family. These are two distinct points of interest: a specific work of art in Oberreit and the Vagen family’s historical connection to Altenburg.

The Feldkirchen-Westerham Local History Collection digitises, preserves and presents the community’s cultural heritage in words, sound and images, from the past and the present. Its scope therefore ranges from records of earlier times to the present day, and its work explicitly encompasses a variety of media. The collection complements the individual historic sites and works of art with a broader perspective on the community’s cultural heritage.

The Kleinhöhenrain Bee Discovery Trail is 2.3 km long. This specific trail length is on a much smaller scale than the Mangfall Cycle Route’s 66 km. The two figures help put the lengths of different routes into perspective, without suggesting that they are comparable types of route.

Landscape and culture in the wider Rosenheim travel destination

The Mangfalltal Golf Club is situated on a plateau above Feldkirchen-Westerham and offers unobstructed views of the Mangfall Mountains from almost every hole. The view reflects the club’s elevated location and offers a different perspective on the landscape from the Mangfall in the valley.

Amerang, in the wider Rosenheim travel destination, offers its own cultural-history focus. The Museum at Amerang Castle provides insights into the castle’s architecture and the history of the aristocratic family. The Amerang Farmhouse Museum, run by the District of Upper Bavaria, offers a different focus: it showcases farmhouses, craft buildings and technical installations from the Chiemgau region. Amerang’s subject matter thus ranges from castle architecture and family history to farmhouses, crafts and technical installations.

The Amerang open-air museum offers private guided tours and activities for groups. Since visitor services may change and arrangements may be necessary, confirm dates in advance if you are planning a guided tour or group visit. The moor discovery trail between Amerang and Halfing, created in 2010, explains how the moorland formed after the Ice Age and introduces the native animal and plant life. Its focus is therefore on the development of the landscape and its natural environment.
