Breitbrunn am Chiemsee: Lakeshore, Culture and Routes

Breitbrunn am Chiemsee combines lakeshore, trails and local culture. Breitbrunn is home to an outdoor swimming area, a marina, churches, chapels and memorial sites. The municipality stretches from the northern shore of Lake Chiemsee to Lake Langbürgner See and is located in the Eggstätt-Hemhofer Seenplatte nature reserve.

Lakeshore, swimming area and trails at Lake Chiemsee

The Chiemsee circular trail runs along the entire lakeshore area of Breitbrunn, usually directly beside the lake. The Chiemsee lakeshore trail also passes directly by Breitbrunn outdoor swimming area. When planning routes by the water, the route descriptions differ in what they refer to: the circular trail follows the lakeshore area, while the lakeshore trail passes the outdoor swimming area. Both routes nevertheless remain oriented toward Lake Chiemsee.

Breitbrunn/Stadl outdoor swimming area has a long pier with a bathing platform. A wheelchair-accessible metal staircase provides access to the lake there.

Rowing boats, electric boats and sailboats can be rented in Mühlner Bucht. Sailboats can also be moored at the local marina. Mühlner Bucht is the place for renting boats, while the marina is for mooring sailboats on Lake Chiemsee.

Culture and history in Breitbrunn

Finds from a Roman villa are displayed in the foyer of Breitbrunn town hall. The neo-Baroque parish church of St. John the Baptist in Breitbrunn was built from stones that were originally intended for Herrenchiemsee Royal Palace. For those interested in culture, Roman finds, the parish church’s distinctive architectural history and the year 1889, when the Malerkapelle was built, are presented as specific local points of reference.

The Malerkapelle in Breitbrunn was built in 1889. The Leonhardi rides are also part of local tradition in Breitbrunn.

The Stocker Chapel is located above Lake Langbürgner See. It is considered a lovingly renovated gem that bears witness to deep popular piety. At Urfahrner Spitz, the King Ludwig II memorial stone also commemorates King Ludwig II’s trips by rowing boat to Herreninsel. The two sites have different geographical references: the chapel is located above Lake Langbürgner See, while the memorial stone is at Urfahrner Spitz.

Routes and practical orientation

The easy cultural walk around Breitbrunn and Gstadt am Chiemsee begins at St. John’s Church and is designated as a 7.2 km circular route. At 7.2 km, the route can be planned as a walk in its own right. Since it is designated as a circular route, it does not require a separately planned return route.

For cyclists, stage 08 of the Mozart Cycle Route runs from Chieming am Chiemsee to Breitbrunn am Chiemsee. Bus route 9520 provides direct connections to Breitbrunn from the train stations in Prien or Traunstein. For arriving by bicycle, the stage begins in Chieming; for travelling by bus, Prien and Traunstein are the starting points. Breitbrunn remains the destination for both connections.
