Winter Sports and Mountain Landscapes

A blue-marked hiking trail through the valley of the Prunéřovský potok is just under eight kilometres long. The route can be reached by car, bus, a weekend train on the Chomutov–Vejprty line or by bicycle. Kýšovický vodopád is designated as the highest waterfall in the Ore Mountains.

Nature

Bezručovo údolí Nature Park covers 6,500 hectares and is located in the Ore Mountains. Its elevation ranges approximately from 380 to 850 metres above sea level.

Bezručovo údolí can be explored on foot along marked trails or by bicycle. An asphalt path of just under seven kilometres leads through the valley to Třetí mlýn and is suitable for pedestrians, cyclists and inline skaters.

Novodomské rašeliniště is a protected peat bog reserve and bird area; at the same time, it is a regular nesting site for black grouse.

Hradiště u Černovic is a protected natural monument known for Tertiary quartzite containing plant fossils. A 240-metre-long rampart of a Bronze Age fortified settlement has also been preserved in Hradiště. A yellow-marked hiking trail leads from Chomutov to Hradiště u Černovic.

Water

Kamencové jezero covers just under 16 hectares; its alum-containing water is considered unique in the world. The lake offers beaches, minigolf, rental boats, pedal boats and stand-up paddleboards and is used for cold-water swimming in a natural bathing environment. For camping, there are cabins as well as pitches for tents or caravans.

Podkrušnohorský zoopark Chomutov covers 112 hectares and showcases around 160 animal species from the Palearctic.

Culture and History

The Chomutov region includes natural attractions, churches and chapels, chateaux, castles, technical sites and folk architecture.

The historic centre of Chomutov has been an urban conservation area since 1992. At the Chomutov museum complex, you can see the Church of Saint Catherine, a lookout tower, the town hall cellars and a monastery courtyard. The Městská věž is used for exhibitions and as a viewing point.

Skanzen Stará Ves provides an insight into historical life in the Ore Mountains, including traditional crafts and gardening. The grounds are characterised by a working Dutch-type windmill next to a small vineyard. Permanent exhibitions showcase Ore Mountain crafts, including lace-making, beekeeping, flax cultivation and flax processing, as well as the production of wooden toys. During the summer season, Skanzen Stará Ves is open daily; admission is covered by a valid zoopark ticket.

Hasištejn Castle has a restaurant, a lookout tower and cultural events. The Chomutov farmers' market offers handmade ceramics and wooden products. The Oblastní muzeum in Chomutov presents permanent and temporary exhibitions on regional history; its offerings also include family activities, lectures and workshops.
