Bolvir – Archaeology, Churches and Trails

Bolvir preserves El Castellot, one of the few Iberian settlements in the Pyrenees. The site is considered the most important settlement of the Ceretani discovered to date.

Culture and History

At the Espai Ceretània, the permanent exhibition explains the various phases of the archaeological site using information panels and display cases containing recovered objects. Immersive virtual-reality headsets offer a journey back in time to the period when Hannibal crossed this area with his army and famous elephants. El Castellot also contains superimposed Iberian, Roman and medieval phases.

The parish church of Santa Cecília preserves a Gothic altarpiece from the 15th century, originally from the church of Nostra Senyora de l’Esperança. Santa Cecília de Bolvir is a single-nave Romanesque church with a semicircular apse.

The wall paintings of Sant Climent de Talltorta, dating from the 18th century, are classified as a cultural asset of national interest. The present-day church of Sant Climent de Talltorta was built in 1667 as a rectangular single-nave building with three side chapels. The Capilla de la Esperanza de Bolvir was built in 1347 and has a single-nave layout, a barrel vault and a bell gable.

A St John’s gathering takes place at Nostra Senyora del Remei on 24 June. The church stands on a promontory with panoramic views over Cerdanya.

Trails and Facilities

The Real Club de Golf Cerdaña was inaugurated by King Alfonso XIII in 1929 and designed by Javier Arana. The club has 27 holes across four different courses.

Bolvir has a network of health-oriented trails with short, medium and long routes. The different route lengths make varying levels of physical activity visible within this offering. For your own planning, you can therefore compare the routes according to this level of activity and consider them independently of the historical sites, church architecture and golf facilities. The trails can thus be treated as a standalone offering alongside the four golf courses and cultural attractions, without equating the two types of offering.

Local Offerings

In 2025, the Mercat de Pagès took place in Bolvir on Saturdays from 26 July to 30 August, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Plaça Major de Bolvir. Visitors could meet producers directly and buy seasonal food and handcrafted products there.
