Nature

Rising above Ribes de Freser is the Granòfir de Ribes, the exposed remains of a volcanic vent more than 460 million years old and an orange rock formation.

In the La Massana area outside Ribes de Freser, open agricultural landscapes with high biodiversity have been preserved. They are home, among other species, to orchids, grasshoppers, green-and-yellow snakes, kestrels and buzzards.

The two natural features invite a comparison between geological uniqueness and biological diversity.

Railway and Hydropower

The Cremallera de Núria rack railway is the rail connection to Vall de Núria and runs daily all year round. The route includes, among others, the Ribes-Enllaç and Ribes-Vila stations.

The Route de les centrals hidroelèctriques del Freser passes the hydropower facilities currently in operation in the upper catchment area of the Freser River and extends as far as Ribes de Freser.

At the Espai Expositiu de les Centrals Hidroelèctriques in the municipal library, visitors can learn how hydropower generation began in 1903 using the water of the Freser and Núria rivers.

The Itinerànnia Route 15 “Vall de Ribes” includes the Ribes–Fustanyà section of the route to the hydropower plants.

The railway, exhibition and trail section explore the subject from different perspectives: as a connection, as technological history and as a route.

Culture and History

The traditional Ballet de Déu dance is part of the Festa Major of Ribes de Freser. It had been lost around 1930 and was revived in 1998.

The ruins of Castell de Sant Pere are a medieval architectural monument in Ribes de Freser; the construction of the castle is generally dated to the 11th century.

The Espai Triadú presents the exhibition «Llegir com viure» about Joan Triadú, based on selected texts from his memoirs «Memòries d’un segle d’or».

The Museo del Cremallera is located at Ribes Vila station in Ribes de Freser. It presents the history of the Vall de Núria rack railway.

The exhibition includes older locomotives, the E-3 electric locomotive in its original condition and a salon car.

The Set Fortins consist of seven bunkers as well as artillery and machine-gun emplacements on a promontory near the Collada de Manter. From there, the approaches to Ribes de Freser, especially from the Rigat valley, were controlled.

Active Trails

The Via ferrata de la Roca de la Creu is located in Ribes de Freser in Ripollès and has a low to moderate difficulty level.

Its route includes overhangs, traverses and a bridge, and ends at the summit of Roc de la Creu.

The approach takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes, the activity approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, and the return approximately 30 minutes.

The separate time estimates provide a clear overview of the time required; the elements mentioned additionally describe the route through individual sections and its endpoint.
