Brezno District: Hotels and Accommodation

Winter and Sport

The National Biathlon Centre in Osrblie offers optimal year-round training conditions for active athletes, amateurs and the general sporting public. It has been confirmed as the venue for the 2024 Open European Championships and has hosted biathlon world championships on roller skis.

In summer, the ski resort in Mýto pod Ďumbierom becomes a bike park; it offers bicycle and e-bike rental, servicing and an MTB school.

Nature

Bystrianska Cave is a national natural monument developed for tourism by SSJ in Brezno District. The tour route is 580 metres long, takes 45 minutes and includes three chasms approximately 20 metres deep.

The surveyed underground labyrinth section of the Dead Bats Cave is 19,885 metres long and 324 metres deep.

Breznianska Skalka is a nature reserve in the cadastral area of Brezno and lies within the protected zone of the Low Tatras National Park. The preserved sessile oak stand at Breznianska Skalka is considered a unique botanical, dendrological and phytogeographical feature of the region.

Horné lazy protects a forest steppe and the associated plant and animal species.

Dobročský prales is a national nature reserve with the highest, fifth level of protection. It is accessible to the public exclusively with a guide booked in advance.

The Tále educational trail features interactive elements with information panels about the nature of the Low Tatras.

Culture and Regional Activities

Chodník lesného času is an educational trail that leads through the grounds of the Lesnícky skanzen in the Vydrovska Valley. It presents the forest as an ecosystem, the history of human use of forests and the development of forestry in Slovakia.

The Čiernohronská lesná železnica is a narrow-gauge railway whose foundation stone was laid in 1909. It has several steam and diesel locomotives as well as historic observation carriages and runs from the central station in Čierny Balog in three directions: to Vydrovo, Dobroč and Šánske.

The Horehronské cyklodreziny are light rail vehicles powered by pedalling and run on tracks with a gauge of 760 mm. They operate on the Čiernohronské železnice route between Hronec and the Šánske passing loop and back.

The Museum of Horehronie in Brezno is now located in two buildings directly on the town square. The museum includes the home of a blue-print craftsman with a wooden textile mangle.

At Salaš Zbojská, visitors can join the Bača and the Vlachs in caring for sheep and other animals and in making cheese and Oštiepky. Traditional Slovak cuisine is served there, focusing on mutton and lamb.

Organised rafting on the Hron includes boats, paddles and equipment, the transport of boats and people, as well as secure parking.
