Podbrezová combines distinctive religious buildings with the history of iron metallurgy. Churches in Podbrezová and Podbrezová-Lopej, exhibitions on industrial development and the results of archaeological research from Hrádok near Horná Lehota form the cultural core of the town. This picture is complemented by a Feast of Saint George, football events and the development of a new narrow-gauge railway station.

Culture
In the Church of Saint George, the main altar painting depicts Saint George fighting the dragon. It was painted in 1893 by Jozef Murgaš. Another important building is the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Stephen of Hungary in Podbrezová, which was built between 1890 and 1892. The single-nave Neo-Gothic building has stained-glass windows made in 1892 at the Forgó and Partners art workshop in Budapest. The church is considered an important representative cultural and historical monument and also documents the local ironmaking traditions.
Podbrezová-Lopej also preserves an independent ecclesiastical testament. The Roman Catholic Gothic Church of Saint George has a massive square bell tower and is surrounded by a wall dating from the 17th century. Thus, different periods and architectural forms stand side by side in Podbrezová and Lopej: the late-19th-century Neo-Gothic religious building and the Gothic church with its older enclosure.
History
The Metallurgical Museum of Železiarne Podbrezová presents an exhibition on the history of iron metallurgy in Podbrezová and the surrounding area. The museum's open-air exhibition is also part of the industrial heritage. It features preserved metallurgical machinery and special equipment from the Podbrezová plants dating from the mid-20th century; at the same time, the exhibition illustrates the production technology of that period.
Another exhibition looks much further back in time. The “Celtic Culture” exhibition at the Železiarne Podbrezová Museum was opened to the public in 2002. It presents the results of archaeological research from Hrádok near Horná Lehota. These research findings indicate that Celts lived there more than 2,000 years ago.
Events
Every year on 24 April, or on the last Sunday in April, Podbrezová commemorates the chivalric tradition of the church in Lopej with the Feast of Saint George. The festival includes an allegorical knight procession, an extensive cultural programme and a folk market. The Zelpo aréna also hosts football matches organised by FK Železiarne Podbrezová, including I Liga, Slovak Cup, preparatory and international matches.
Getting around
The status of the Šánske–Chvatimech railway line is explicitly restricted in the 2026 timetable: it is currently out of service for regular traffic. Only operational or special trains run on the line, at a special fare. At the same time, an area of the Čiernohronská železnica with a narrow-gauge railway boarding station is currently being developed in Podbrezová between the main road and the Hron River.
