The rectangular Námestie gen. M. R. Štefánika in Brezno measures 213 × 146 metres and is unusually large for Slovakia. Because of its significant cultural and historical value, the square is designated as a heritage conservation zone. Three historic buildings belonging to the Horehronské múzeum are also located directly on the main square. They house exhibitions on regional life and culture, the history of the town, and an exhibition dedicated to the memory of Milan Rastislav Štefánik. A historic bell-ringer’s apartment is also part of the museum.

Culture
The Brezno town park is part of the historic townscape. It is the only historic urban park in upper Pohronie and is also a national cultural monument. The Piarist monastery was built between 1694 and 1713. The chapel of the former Piarist monastery houses Brezno’s oldest altarpiece: a panel painting of Saint Barbara from a late Gothic winged altarpiece dating from the late 15th century. Brezno’s oldest movable monument is also located there: a polychrome wooden sculpture of the Madonna and Child from the late 15th century.
Another prominent building is the synagogue, with its elegant octagonal tower and onion-shaped finial; it was consecrated in 1902. The foundation stone of the town tower was laid in 1830. The tower served as a bell tower and watchtower and houses an exhibition about Milan Rastislav Štefánik, a period-furnished bell-ringer’s apartment, and a lookout point offering a bird’s-eye view of the town.
History and Exhibitions
The permanent historical exhibition “Brezno v premenách času” is part of the Horehronské múzeum. The exhibition “Nostalgia” in Gate No. 2 on Námestie gen. Štefánika focuses on a different aspect of contemporary history. It explores the socialist era through themed images, panels and educational elements. It also includes the interactive game “Ako sa žilo v časoch nie tak dávnych” in a period-furnished apartment.
Svet Ilúzià adds a playful exhibition venue. The interactive fantasy rooms are based on discovery, playful experiences and altered perceptions of objects. The attraction also includes an interactive underground area inspired by the mining history of the Horehronie region. A typical artisan and farmer’s house of a blue-print dyer at 20 Rázusova Street displays a historical everyday object: a rare wooden folk mangle from the first half of the 19th century, which is accessible through the Horehronské múzeum.
Nature and Trails
The NáuÄŤnĂ˝ banskĂ˝ chodnĂk combines exercise with the town’s industrial history. The educational trail is approximately 6 km long, includes 12 stops, takes around 2 to 3 hours and passes old mining and ironworks sites in the town area. In the Banisko district, there is an enclosure with fallow deer, mouflon and red deer. The animals can be observed, photographed and fed. Nearby are a historic orchard serving as an arboretum and a recreation area; interactive information boards provide information about the animals and trees of the surrounding forests.
The climb to the final station of the Stations of the Cross near Brezno is also easy, takes around 20 minutes and offers a beautiful view of the town. During the summer season, a tourist train also operates on the streets of Brezno and in the immediate surrounding area.
