Bacúch – Nature, Trail and History

The Bacúch–Vyšná Boca trail is 14 kilometres long and takes approximately five and a half hours. Its five information boards cover Bacúch, the Prameň Boženy Němcovej spring, the Podvrch site, the Bacúšske sedlo mountain pass and Vyšná Boca. The trail also includes access to a former copper mine.

The route therefore connects several named points and topics within a single trail. The key aspects are its length and approximate duration, as well as the five stations with their different local and landscape references.

Nature

The Nízke Tatry Natura 2000 site also includes the cadastral area of Bacúch. The protected areas of Bacúch also include the Bacúšska Jelšina national nature reserve.

The mountains of Čertova Svadba, Fišerka, Blato and Zadnia Hoľa are located in the vicinity of Bacúch. The landscape classification therefore extends from a protected area within the cadastral area to several named mountains in the town’s immediate surroundings.

Things to See Along the Way

The Prameň Boženy Němcovej spring is a mineral spring in the forest above Bacúch at an elevation of 635 metres. At the northern edge of Bacúch, it lies on a blue-marked hiking trail leading to the Bacúšske sedlo mountain pass and the main ridge of the Low Tatras.

The spring is both a distinct landscape feature and part of the network of routes around Bacúch. Its location is defined by the forest above the town, its elevation of 635 metres, the northern edge of the town and the blue trail markings.

History

The Church of Saint Joseph in Bacúch was built in 1863 and renovated and extended in 1936. Its main altar dates from 1863 and features a painting by J. Jonáš depicting Bacúch and the transport of timber.

The use of a facility also reflects the history of the town: until 1953, it was used to store water. After it was filled, the water was released to increase the flow of the Hron River for the wooden rafts waiting to depart.

Parking is available in Bacúch. There are also bus and train connections from Brezno to Bacúch.
