Nature

The highest parts of the area of Heľpa along the ridge of the Low Tatras lie within Nízke Tatry National Park. The southern part of the cadastral area of Heľpa extends into the Veľká Stožka state nature reserve.

Hiking

One of the village’s regular events is the Výstup na Veľký bok hiking event: it is organised annually in Heľpa on the first Saturday in August by hikers in cooperation with the municipality. Route A starts in Heľpa’s square and leads to the summit of Veľký bok. A less demanding option starts at the Priehyba saddle; participants are taken there by bus from Heľpa.

The Silvestrovský výstup na Veľkú Vápenicu winter hike takes place every year on 31 December. For a route leading to a different destination, there is the Náučný chodník chotárom obce Heľpa educational trail, also known as Chotárom obce Heľpa. It is an 8.3-kilometre circular route that can take up to 3.5 hours. The educational trail can be started in the village centre; parking is available at Jarmočisko. In April 2026, Chotárom obce Heľpa had new information boards and offered views of the surrounding landscape.

Culture and History

The Horehronské dni spevu a tanca in Heľpa take place annually on the last weekend of June. The event presents traditional crafts and ethnographic exhibitions, as well as traditional cuisine. Heľpa has been protected as a heritage zone since 1992. Its appearance is characterised by originally block-like rows of wooden log houses, mostly oriented with their gables towards the street; traditional shingle-roof details are also present.

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Heľpa is part of the local architectural history. The late Baroque church was built in 1800 and has a wooden Louis XVI pulpit from the early 19th century. In January 2026, the mines of Vyšné Poľany were opened to visitors.

Cycling and Getting There

The Z Heľpy cez Pohorelú na Priehybu route is a 23.6-kilometre circular tour of medium difficulty. It starts at a car park in Heľpa and leads to Priehyba, a connection point between Liptov and Horehronie. There is a charging station for electric bicycles in Heľpa’s village square. Heľpa can be reached by bus or train.
