Braväcovo: Cross-country skiing, mountain trails and folk culture

Cross-country skiing on the southern slope of Beňuška: route profile and elevation difference near Čertovica

A cross-country skiing route connects Braväcovo with the Čertovica mountain pass. It runs along the southern slope of Beňuška and has the greatest elevation difference among the cross-country ski trails at Čertovica. Those planning a sport-oriented winter stage can take this elevation difference into account as a specific planning factor. The Čertovica pass is the route’s connection point, while the southern slope of Beňuška defines its spatial course more precisely. During preparation, you can plan for the elevation difference when distributing your energy and breaks along this route. For a sport-oriented stage, the elevation profile therefore remains an important factor alongside the route profile.

Hiking trails: Beňuška and Bukovinská skala

A green-marked hiking trail to Beňuška also passes through the village. Beňuška, known by the traditional local name Käčka, is the highest peak in the cadastral area of Braväcovo, at 1,544 metres. The green marking identifies the trail through Braväcovo and creates a clear connection to the peak. The elevation of 1,544 metres provides a fixed reference point for hike planning. The ascent of Bukovinská skala is called “Bukovinka na Bukovinke”. The elevation figure and the trail marking can be considered separately during preparation: one describes the destination, while the other describes the route through the village.

History, wooden houses and Slovak folk architecture

By the end of the 16th century, Braväcovo existed as a chamber lumberjack settlement. According to tradition, Braväcovo and the settlements of Podholie and Srnkovo were founded in the 16th century by German miners and Polish charcoal burners. Numerous old wooden houses have been preserved in the village; many of them are used as holiday homes. Schweintaal Guesthouse was built in 2007 in the traditional style of Slovak folk architecture. The guesthouse from 2007 was built chronologically after the settlement’s 16th-century history.

Amphitheatre, folk culture and traditional crafts

The small amphitheatre in Braväcovo was ceremonially opened on 28 August 1999 and serves as a venue for cultural events held by the municipality and its residents. The BKZ Bukovinka association is dedicated to developing and promoting traditional folk culture in Braväcovo and the surrounding region. The Na Bielych Handľoch folklore festival takes place in Braväcovo every year in July. The festival also includes a market for folk products and traditional crafts. Those interested in culture can include the July date in their travel plans.

There is a bus connection from Braväcovo to Brezno. Train and bus connections are available in Beňuš.
