Orlicke Zahori in Winter: Cross-Country Skiing, Nature and Culture

The Ski aréna Orlické Záhoří in Jadrná has a 4.6 km-long illuminated cross-country ski trail. The combination of trail length and lighting can be compared with the other routes and excursion destinations. Orlické Záhoří lies in the valley of the Divoká Orlice on the Czech-Polish border, between the ridges of the Orlické Mountains and the Bystrzyckie Mountains.

Geographical Location

Orlické Záhoří has a road border crossing into Poland. It can be used by pedestrians, cyclists, passenger cars and buses. The border location is therefore just as much part of the local setting as the Divoká Orlice valley and the two mountain ridges.

Winter and Nature

The area's natural features include the Ptačí oblast Orlické Záhoří, a 904-hectare Natura 2000 protected area consisting mainly of meadows and pastures. The area protects the corn crake (Crex crex) and its wet meadows and spring-fed meadows as breeding habitat.

The Bedřichovka educational trail is 3 km long, is a walking route and is classified as easy. A longer section of the educational trail runs from the Bedřichovka Nature Reserve through the Trčkovská louka Nature Reserve to the Trčkov National Nature Reserve. The different trail lengths, route types and landscapes can be compared with one another.

The approximately 7 km-long Horské louky Zaorlicka walking excursion leads behind the ridge of the Orlické Mountains into the area known as Zaorlicko, directly to the Polish state border and the right bank of the Divoká Orlice.

Culture and Trails

The Church of St. John the Baptist in Orlické Záhoří is a late Baroque church dating from 1754–1763. It houses a permanent exhibition on the history of glassmaking.

The S Kačenkou po stopách sklářů educational trail is 15 km long and can be traversed between Deštné v Orlických horách and Orlické Záhoří by car, bicycle or on foot. Along this educational trail, seven information panels explain the history of glassworks and glassmaking in the Orlické Mountains.

Kunštátský drvoštěp is a traditional international woodworking competition in Orlické Záhoří. The Kunštátská Chapel stands nearby on the ridge of the Orlické Mountains at an altitude of 1,035 metres. It was rebuilt in 1868–1869 on the site of an earlier chapel. The structure is built in an approximately circular shape and has a shingled conical roof.

The Museum výuky minulého století in Orlické Záhoří contains a restored classroom from the First Czechoslovak Republic. Children can sit there at old school desks and view historical teaching aids. The former Pašerácká stezka educational trail near Černá Voda in Orlické Záhoří has been dismantled.
