Hiking and Culture in Ortisei
The Gherdëina Museum in Ortisei offers insight into the history, culture, and nature of Val Gardena. Ortisei is known for its artistically decorated and carved wooden sculptures, created by woodcarving families for generations. St. Jakob Church and San Giacomo
St. Jakob Church, also known as San Giacomo, is traditionally considered the oldest church in Val Gardena; its origins date back to the 12th century. The building has an overall Gothic appearance, an interior that is partly Gothic and partly Baroque, and remarkable late-15th-century frescoes in the presbytery. The presbytery is the altar area of a church; frescoes are wall paintings. Gothic and Baroque represent different periods in art history.
Paths to the Church and Seceda
The gently ascending Path of Dialogue leads from Ortisei to San Giacomo Church in about an hour. Seceda is located in the Puez-Odle Nature Park. The ascent from Ortisei to Seceda begins directly in the village, leads through shady forests, and opens up views of the valley and the surrounding Dolomites. The challenging hike involves 1,200 meters of elevation gain and takes about 3.5 to 4.5 hours, depending on the route chosen; good physical fitness is required.
