Eggen: Mountain Village, Winter Experiences and Historic Destinations

Mountain Village and Landscape

Eggen is a mountain village at an altitude of 1,120 m. Around Eggen, there are evergreen forests and meadows as well as peaks, snow-covered areas, and expansive views. The landscape is therefore not limited to the village center but extends into the surrounding area with its forests, meadows, and peaks.

Winter Sports near Eggen

The Latemar Dolomites ski area, with ski slopes and toboggan runs, is five minutes from Eggen. In addition to the ski slopes, toboggan runs are part of the area's winter sports offering. The proximity of the ski area complements the trails that begin directly in the village center.

Hikes from the Village Center

One hike begins in the village center of Eggen and follows Trail 7A through meadows and forests to the traditional Grott-Hof, one of the historic Eggen farmsteads.

Another hike also begins in the village center of Eggen and leads over the Samberg. It follows Trails 7 and S to the Buschenschank Häusler Sam. The two routes differ both in their course and in their destinations.

Church, Tradition and Farmsteads

The parish church of St. Nicholas in Ega, with its Gothic bell tower, is one of the village's landmarks. In Eggen, it was believed that Saint Nicholas protected the village from the raging waters of the Sambach and Geroldbach streams.

The historic group of farmsteads known as “Städtl” in Ega, including the Gerberhof, still conveys the rural life of times past. Thus, alongside the parish church, the village area of Ega also features a historic group of farmsteads.

Destinations in the Surrounding Area

The Latemar Art Museum is located in the surroundings of San Nicolò d'Ega. The peaks Cima del Forcellone, Corno d'Ega, Latemar Spitze, and Latemar (Diamantiditurm) are also located in this area. These peaks complement the cultural destinations with specific mountain landmarks in the wider surroundings.

The Museo della Apicoltura Plattner is a museum in the surroundings of San Nicolò d'Ega. Castel Salego is a castle in the same area. Palazzo Mercantile, a palace, is also located in the wider regional surroundings of San Nicolò d'Ega.
