Village centre, museums and the Kofel
In the historic centre of Kastelruth, the buildings Mendelhaus, Edenberg, Landhaus and Wolfwirt feature painted façades designed by the local artist Eduard Burgauner. The bell tower of Kastelruth is 82 metres high and has 298 wooden steps. In the historic Laechler building in the centre of Kastelruth, the Costume Museum displays historic traditional costumes and their accessories from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The Kofel, a porphyry hill in the middle of the village of Kastelruth, is a local recreation area, a Way of the Cross and a place full of adventure for children.
History in its original locations
The school museum in Tagusa near Kastelrotto has existed since 2005 and displays a special collection of furnishings and teaching documents preserved at their original location. The school museum in Tagusens is open on Wednesdays and Sundays from 2:00 to 5:30 p.m.; no registration is required for a visit. The Farm Museum is located in St. Oswald, a district of Kastelrotto, in the former hay barn of the Tschötscherhof farm belonging to the Jaider family. Tagusa has had a primary school since the 18th century, since the introduction of compulsory schooling.
Walks, the alpine pasture and trails
The Marinzen Alm alpine pasture lies above Kastelruth at an altitude of 1,500 metres. In Kastelruth, the Marinzen cable car takes visitors up to the Marinzen Alm. The well-maintained circular trail over the Kofel, which is also known as Monte Calvario, passes through a picturesque landscape and is suitable for short walks, including with a pushchair. Kastelruth and the Seiser Alm have a 450-kilometre network of hiking trails leading to viewpoints, legendary places, alpine pastures, mountain huts and Schwaigen. Kastelruth and the Seiser Alm holiday region also offer 22 bike tours with 16 variants for different fitness levels. From Kastelruth, the Seiser Alm can be reached either by bus on the Seiser Alm Express, line 10, or by the Seiser Alm railway from Seis.
Music, festivals and a herb tour
The Spatzen Museum provides information about the music group Kastelruther Spatzen; a wide selection of souvenirs can also be purchased at the Spatzen Museum. The Kastelruther Spatzen Festival takes place every year in October in Kastelruth. In Kastelrotto, major celebrations take place for Corpus Christi in May or June, on the patron saint’s day at the end of July and for the harvest festival at the beginning of October. Registration is required for a guided tour of the Pflegerhof in St. Vigil; the tour explains the cultivation of medicinal and culinary herbs.
