The fourth stage of the AhrSteig runs for 17.4 kilometres from Insul via Sierscheid, Dümpelhardt, Liers and Linder Höhe to Kreuzberg. The route is marked in both directions with the blue AhrSteig logo. The AhrSteig as a whole is a route of around 100 kilometres from the source of the Ahr to its mouth.

Hiking

From Sierscheid, the AhrSteig offers descents towards Schuld or towards Liers and the Ahr. The Ahr lies below the village and can be reached on foot from the village. On the fourth AhrSteig stage, the trail climbs to Dümpelhardt through open heathland and then continues through meadows and forests into the Liersbach valley.

A shorter route is the panoramic trail around Dümpelhardt. It is just under three kilometres long and easy to walk. The trail begins at the wayside cross above the Maternus Chapel in Sierscheid and also offers views of the Nürburg. From Dümpelhardt, the panoramic view extends over the meadows and forests of the Eifel down into the upper Ahr valley.

Landscape

Sierscheid is located in the northern Eifel at an elevation of around 400 metres. Fields extend on three sides, while an extensive forest adjoins the settlement to the north.

Culture and history

The Maternus Chapel in Sierscheid is a simple single-nave building, first constructed around 1730. Later renovations are documented, including work carried out in 2024.

Sierscheid is a well-preserved clustered village with characteristic farm complexes. By the end of 2016, almost all of these complexes had been restored in accordance with heritage conservation standards. Sierscheid was first documented in 1290 as belonging to the Electoral Cologne Amt of Nürburg.

Local traditions include a St Martin's procession, lighting a St Martin's bonfire and putting up a maypole in May. Sierscheid's village festival traditionally takes place on the third weekend of September.
