Winnerath: Hotels and Accommodations

The Winnerather Höhe is a scenic ridge near Winnerath offering distant views towards Insul. The viewpoint is connected to circular hiking trail no. 6 Schuld–Winnerath–Insul–Schuld and the MTB Route 2 BULLS Achterbahn. The access path is freely accessible year-round; there is no winter maintenance.

Landscape and Trails

A small wildlife enclosure is located on the edge of the settlement. It offers panoramic views over the Eifel heights; the viewpoint at the wildlife enclosure is also connected to hiking route RWW no. 6 Schuld.

The 15.2-kilometre Hocheifel Panorama Trail connects the AhrSteig with the Eifelleiter and passes through several municipalities, including Winnerath. The third stage of the AhrSteig is 19.4 kilometres long and also lists Winnerath as one of the municipalities it passes through.

History and Culture

Winnerath was first mentioned in a document in 1501. The Catholic subsidiary chapel of St. Apollinaris is a hall church dating from 1666.

The ending “-rath” is associated with the period of large-scale clearances from the 10th to the 14th century. The place name Winnerath is linked to Winnenrode, interpreted as “the clearing of Wino or Winne”.

The Wackelsloch Chapel near Winnerath was completed after 15 years of work. Inside, there is a depiction of Saint Francis of Assisi with three birds, referring to the traditional Sermon to the Birds. The chapel is intended as a resting place for people who enjoy the view over the valley and woodland landscape.
