Cross-country ski trails of varying lengths are groomed around Nürburg. Nature

The red hiking route around Nürburg offers panoramic views over the Eifel and passes a former ski-jumping facility on the northern castle hill. The yellow hiking route runs along the Antoniusbuche, Tiergarten and Hatzenbach sections of the Nordschleife and passes abandoned quarries from which building materials for the Nürburgring Nordschleife were extracted. The Grüne Hölle hiking route follows the Nordschleife for 20.8 kilometers; Nürburg also has the 0.8-kilometer Kleine Burgrunde route.

For mountain bikes, the “Durch die Grüne Hölle” route leads around the Nordschleife. The 24-hour mountain bike race “Rad am Ring” takes place around Nürburg and starts in the Nürburgring paddock. In the Nürburgring adventure region, themed hiking trails include mills, military orders and the Grüne Hölle.

Just outside Nürburg is the municipal Burgweiherhütte barbecue hut. It has toilets, electricity and water and can accommodate groups of 10 to 40 people. The Burgweiherhütte is accessible by car; parking is available nearby.

Culture

Nürburg Castle was built in the 12th century by the Counts of Are. It stands on a basalt cone; the basalt rock beneath it was mentioned as “Mons nore” around 954 AD. At 678 meters, Nürburg Castle is the highest castle in Rhineland-Palatinate. The 20-meter-high keep of the Nürburg castle ruins can be climbed and offers views over the Hohe Eifel, the surrounding villages and the Nordschleife.

A church in Nürburg was first mentioned in documentary records in 1202. The present St. Nicholas Church has a Gothic choir dating from the 15th century; its Baroque nave and tower were built in 1816/17.

The Nürburgring offers an approximately 1.5-hour backstage tour in Nürburg with access to selected track areas and insights into the history of motorsport. These include the pits, pit lane, media center, paddock and winners’ podium. Tourist drives with your own car or motorcycle are also offered on the Nordschleife and the Grand Prix circuit.
