Lahnau lies directly on the Lahn, on the northern or right bank of the river. The built-up areas are located on the Lahn Main Terrace. As a municipality, Lahnau consists of the three districts of Waldgirmes, Dorlar and Atzbach.

Geographical location

Lahnau lies approximately halfway between Wetzlar and Gießen. Wetzlar is about 7 km away, and Gießen about 8 km.

Culture and history

Archaeological excavations near Dorlar identified the Roman camp of Lahnau-Dorlar. It was a large Roman military camp dating from the time of the Drusus campaigns around 10 BC. Archaeological excavations on the western edge of Waldgirmes also provided evidence of the existence of a civilian Roman town in Germania magna.

The Gleiberg Castle, Kalsmunt, the Hainhaus small fort and the Holzheimer Unterwald small fort are located in the vicinity of Lahnau.

The Himberg is located in the immediate vicinity of Lahnau. Wettenberg, Bleidenberg and Bilstein are also located in the surrounding area.
