Museums and Industrial Heritage

In Wetzlar, the Lottehaus recalls Goethe’s encounter with Charlotte Buff and the summer of 1772. Two rooms on the first floor house a permanent exhibition on the origins and impact of his first novel, “The Sorrows of Young Werther.” The visit thus connects a specific place with the history of a literary work.

In Dillenburg, Villa Grün explores industrial and artisanal production in the Dill region. It presents objects and detailed settings in more than 20 rooms; the basement also features an elaborate, multimedia-rich mining exhibition. The Glockenwelt Greifenstein takes visitors through a thousand years of German bell history with almost 100 bells. The castle also offers spectacular views from its twin towers. Show Cave and Trails Through the Countryside

The Herbstlabyrinth-Adventhöhle cave system in Breitscheid is the largest cave system in Hesse and one of the most significant in Germany. On weekdays and during school holidays, you can reach the show cave on RMV bus route 510, getting off at the Breitscheid, Rathaus stop. From there, it takes about 20 to 30 minutes to walk to the cave. As this is a scheduled public transport service, check the timetable before setting off and allow for the walk that follows.

For hiking, the widely known Lahn-Dill-Bergland Trail offers a particularly rewarding way to explore the countryside of Lahn-Dill District. The Lahn Hiking Trail crosses the Lahn Valley and also leads through the district’s countryside.
