Church and Historical Traces

The Catholic parish church of St. John the Baptist and St. Michael is a Romanesque choir-tower church dating from around 1200. It includes an attached two-storey sacristy and a nave with a steeply pitched gabled roof. Several features help classify the building: the choir-tower structure, sacristy and gabled-roof nave each contribute to its description.

Below the gallery, the “Black Madonna of Egmating” stands beneath a Baroque canopy. The “Plague Column,” dating from 1589, is located on Jägerweg. These two specific landmarks add further local religious and historical references to the picture of the church building.

The former Egmating manor house is an elongated, two-storey wing with gabled roofs of varying ridge heights; its core dates from the 17th century. In the area around the manor house and its predecessor buildings, which had Baroque gardens, there are underground archaeological remains from the late Middle Ages and early modern period. The manor house and archaeological traces thus point to different historical periods.

The municipality’s history offers another perspective: the route of a Roman consular road from Regensburg via Sempt to the Roman road station of “Isinisca”—today’s Kleinhelferndorf—formed the basis for the later permanent settlement in the area around Egmating. The town’s history thus leads from a Roman transport route to the later settlement in the area.

Moorland and Kettle Holes

The kettle-hole moorland of Egmating Forest includes a variety of intact small mires. Their ecological communities are now rarely preserved in Bavaria. In the eastern forest area of Egmating, kettle holes are also protected as nature reserves and considered evidence of the last Ice Age. The natural landscape therefore encompasses two distinct aspects: rarely preserved moorland communities and protected landforms of glacial significance.

Golf Course and Dining

The 9-hole Arabella Course at Schloss Egmating Golf Club features small lakes and numerous bunkers that protect its undulating greens. Water features and bunkers are therefore not just elements of the course; together with the rolling greens, they shape its distinctive design. For golf enthusiasts, this gives an idea of the course beyond its number of holes.

The “Pizzeria Cristalina Schlossgarten” restaurant is located in the historic castle rooms of Schloss Egmating Golf Club and serves Italian-Mediterranean cuisine. The golf club grounds thus combine a landscaped golf course with dining in historic castle rooms.

In the wider Ebersberg destination

In the wider Ebersberg destination, the observation tower in Ebersberg Forest leads up 169 steps to a sweeping panorama: the view stretches across the entire Alpine foothills, from the Berchtesgaden Alps to the Allgäu. On particularly clear days, distant peaks over 3,000 metres high can even be seen. This view combines the climb up the steps with vistas across the named Alpine regions.

The Museum of Forest and Environment has stood right next to Ebersberg Forest since 2004 and explores the history of forest use and forest ecology. Also in the wider Ebersberg destination, the Ebersberg Forest Environmental Education Centre is a venue for events on education for sustainable development; it holds the Bavarian quality seal “Umweltbildung.Bayern.” Events are held mainly outdoors and in the adjacent forest. Visits with school classes or other groups are possible.
