Forest, Panoramic Views and Environmental Education

Climb the observation tower in the Ebersberg Forest via 169 steps. From the top, the view extends across the entire Alpine foothills, from the Berchtesgaden Alps to the Allgäu; on exceptionally clear days, you can even see distant peaks over 3,000 metres high. The viewpoint thus combines a clearly defined climb with a sweeping panorama. Views of the distant peaks are only possible when visibility is exceptionally good.

The Forest and Environment Museum has stood right next to the Ebersberg Forest since 2004. It explores the history of forest use and forest ecology. The observation tower and museum offer different perspectives on the forest: one looks out across the landscape, while the other explores how it is used and its ecology.

The Ebersberg Forest Environmental Education Centre also focuses on nature and learning. It has been awarded the Bavarian quality seal “Umweltbildung.Bayern” and runs educational programmes for sustainable development. These take place mainly outdoors and in the adjacent forest. Visits with school classes and other groups are possible, so it is worth noting when planning that the programmes are held mostly outdoors.

History and Culture in Various Places

A branch of the Roman road led to Roman estates in Poing, which were discovered during construction work in 2004. The Roman connection to this place is therefore linked to a specific discovery. In Grafing, the Town Museum offers insights into artistic highlights from the surrounding area as well as the lives and work of the region’s residents. It combines temporary and permanent exhibitions, offering different ways to explore art and regional history.

The Town Museum in Grafing is listed as open on Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. and Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m.; it is closed on public holidays. Check the opening times before your visit. This will help you fit a museum visit in with your other plans without scheduling a visit outside the stated opening hours.

Another historic destination is Elkofen Castle in Unterelkofen, two kilometres south of Grafing town centre. The castle is one of the best-preserved in Upper Bavaria. It is surrounded by a wide, deep moat that was once filled with water. The location helps distinguish the castle from destinations in Grafing town centre; the moat is described as a former, not a present-day, feature.

Pre-Christmas Traditions and a Farm Festival

The Kirchseeon Perchtenlauf is an established part of the pre-Christmas season and attracts many visitors every year. Strikingly designed masks, elaborate costumes, drums and bells shape the atmosphere in the market town of Kirchseeon. If you want to combine a trip with this tradition, check the specific event dates before making plans: the fact that it takes place annually does not tell you when it will be held during a particular stay.

The former Herrmannsdorf estate lies east of Glonn and is a nationally renowned model project for organic farming. Herrmannsdorfer also hosts a large farm festival once a year for the harvest thanksgiving. The programme includes specialities from the fire pit, porchetta, pastrami, bratwursts, freshly made Auszogne pastries and freshly tapped Schweinsbräu beer. The festival also opens the stables and workshops to visitors. The harvest thanksgiving connection is useful for planning a trip, but you should check the specific festival date in advance.
