Mercus-Garrabet combines notable evidence of regional history with landscapes around the Ariège and the Pyrenees. The Pont du Diable is located on the Ariège River in the north of the municipality of Mercus-Garrabet. The fortified bridge with two arches probably dates from the 13th century and lies within the territories of the municipalities of Montoulieu and Mercus-Garrabet.

Culture

One of the special features at the Col du Traucadou is the Roc des Sorcières, a megalithic cult monument. On the Roc des Sorcières, human-made marks engraved into a rock along the path to Fourcat can be seen; they date back several millennia. In Mercus, the Church of Saint Louis has been listed as a historic monument since 1910. There is also a Romanesque church in Mercus built on a granite block.

Access to the Pont du Diable is via parking the car farther up and walking down a steep footpath closed to cars. Anyone considering Mercus-Garrabet for a stay may wish to find or book a hotel.

Water

The Base nautique de Mercus is located on the shore of the 45-hectare Plan d’eau de Mercus. It offers water sports activities such as water skiing, pedal boating, stand-up paddleboarding and XXL stand-up paddleboarding. Access to the Plan d’eau de Mercus is free all year round.

Nature

The hike to Mont Fourcat reaches a summit more than 2,000 metres high. Roc Ponchut is a peak in the immediate vicinity of Mercus-Garrabet, as is Roc du Traucadou.

The Grottes de Niaux, a cave, the Pic de la Lauzate, a peak, and the Archives départementales de l’Ariège, an archive, are located in the vicinity of Mercus-Garrabet. In the wider surrounding region are the Château de Foix, a castle, and the Cathédrale Saint-Antonin, a church.
